American Psychological Association states that over the past decade video games have been changing dramatically by becoming “increasingly complex, diverse, realistic, and social in nature” (Granic, Lobel, Engels 66). The study focuses on the four main categories that are beneficial from playing video games such as “cognitive, motivational, emotional, and social” (Granic, Lobel, Engels 66). Many benefits for cognitive involve “higher spatial resolution in visual processing and enhanced mental rotation abilities” (Granic, Lobel, Engels 68). Another benefit is motivation which the study tries to examine if these effects of motivation are both inside and outside of gaming contexts (Granic, Lobel, Engels 70). The motivational benefit is the incremental theory stating that as gamers play they “believe intelligence is malleable” and achievable with effort (Granic, Lobel, Engels 71). The other benefits of emotion is that children will have commitment and achievements more in high school because of the awarding activity of playing video games that leads to a “loss of self consciousness” (Granic, Lobel, Engels 72). Lastly, video games benefit adolescents socially by allowing them to organize groups or create teams to lead people for social causes within the virtual world (Granic, Lobel, Engels 73).
